Occupational Therapy is a healthcare profession that utilizes purposeful activity with individuals who are limited by physical injury, illness, or congenital abnormality.

Barnes Rehabilitation Center is a dynamic therapy facility, offering Occupational and Physical Therapy services, with a specialty in certified hand and upper extremity rehabilitation.

Our mission at Barnes Rehabilitation Center is to provide optimal care and state-of-the-art therapeutic interventions to increase functional outcomes of individuals who have suffered injuries at home and work, degenerative diseases and deconditioning.

Specific diagnoses treated include:

  • Rotator Cuff Syndromes
  • Tendon Injuries
  • Impingement Syndromes
  • Radial, Cubital and Carpal Tunnel Syndromes
  • Fractures, and
  • Soft Tissue Injuries

Splints and braces are also custom-fabricated.

In addition to the above, the Barnes Rehabilitation Center is the only Occupational/Physical Therapy Rehabilitation Center in Houma offering ASTYM Therapy, a non-invasive therapy process which stimulates the body’s healing response, which results in the remodeling/resorption of scar tissue and the regeneration of degenerated tendons. The approach is a non-invasive therapy that works fast and consistently‚Ķno meds, no needles, no surgery.

Michael A. Barnes, MS, OTR/L, CHT

Michael A. Barnes is a Master’s level Occupational therapist, having graduated from Touro College, New York. He has practiced and specialized in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation since 1994.

Barnes has had extensive training and education in this field of specialty, achieving a national certification in hand therapy (CHT), attending the Frackelton Lectureship in Wisconsin, Contemporary Approaches to Upper Extremity Surgery and Rehabilitation and the 23rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hand Therapists.

Michael is the only Occupational Therapist in Houma certified in ASTYM treatment rehabilitation (see our ASTYM page for more information).

Barnes has also held a position as an assistant professor at the University of South Alabama, where he taught classes on Musculoskeletal Disorders of the Upper Extremity and Hand and Upper Extremity Splinting.
